Dr. Alfonso Martín-Peña
I am a neurogeneticist interested in the synaptic mechanisms supporting cognition. To pursue this long-term goal, my work focuses on two main areas: (i) the molecular and cellular processes that regulate the formation, consolidation and retrieval of memories, in synapses of healthy individuals; and (ii) the erosion of these pathways in neurodegenerative disorders that lead to synapse loss and memory impairments.
I am currently employed by the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlantic University (FAU); I am also affiliated with the Department of Neurology and the Center for Smell and Taste in the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida, and the Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at FAU. I have reviewed grant proposals for the Alzherimer’s Society of the UK and reviewed scientific manuscripts for numerous prestigious journals such as PlosONE, Current Alzheimer Research, Disease Models and Mechanisms and Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience among others. I am also Associate Editor/Topic Editor for the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, Guest Editor for the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, the Chair of the workshop on ‘Neuronal Circuits and Behaviour’ of the 18th “European Drosophila Neurobiology Conference, Neurofly 2020” and Scientific Program Committee member for the 2nd Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) Neuroscience Next 2021.
